SAIPAN

Here is Clyde at the beach on Saipan -- along with a little ambassador.   It's just 120 miles north
of Guam -- also a US possession.   Remarkably it seems more Japanese
than US.   Just like Guam the Japanese  come here to vacation and especially
to marry.  The year round temp here is 85.

Just a little look to the left of our lounger.  The beach we are on is
just off of Saipan.

A little look to the right of our lounger and you can see some
fairly strange fashion choices for Japanese beachwear.

Another strange sight  is this Japanese.  Sound asleep --- wearing his
snorkel mask and flotation device

Saipan was a big battle ground during WW II.  This is one the many
gun emplacements left by the Japanese.  There is all kinds of hardware
on the island and especially underwater.

Clyde taking a closer look

Clyde thought that this sign prohibiting the spitting a betel nut
juice especially interesting.  The Chamoros - natives of the Northern Marianas
of which Guam and Saipan are a part are very fond of chewing
betel nuts.  And the juice they spit is red -- also their teeth.
